Engineers of the Massachusetts Technological Institute created unique robots, which are able to build construction from wicker fiberglass and will be able to replace builders in the future.

Bots like a silkworm use one thread that rotates around itself, forming non-standard fiberglass structures. Each device is slightly more than a conventional litter bottle covered with silicone with a knob rotating on top. For the construction of the segment, the robot handle winds the body with a fiberglass coated with a resin. Next, under the influence of the ultraviolet resin, hardens and glues the threads together. After each segment (9 cm), he pushes himself up and starts a new cycle.

Unlike other robots, the development of MIT creates its own building material, and does not use it ready. The device can control the slope of each new segment, which allows to build curved pipe-like structures. Such assistants can be used in the construction of buildings, bridges under water or in dangerous places, desert or other planets. Machines can also be united with other types of robot designers to create more complex multiphase structures.

Existing models are managed by a computer, but future versions will be equipped with cameras, lasers and other sensors to coordinate and respond to obstacles. The developers put into operation 16 robots, which raised the pipe with a height of about 4 meters. This bouquet of fiberglass successfully sustained winter and autumn in Massachusetts.
