Presented digital smell technology for the Internet, AR / VR

The team of scientists of the Malaysian Institute of Imagination has developed a digital smell technology that can be transmitted via the Internet or feel in virtual reality.

Imagine that while watching a film about war, you can feel the smell of gunpowder, taste dishes using augmented reality in a restaurant or feel the smell of perfume when communicating online. It is this future that scientists seemed to demonstrate the unique digital smell technology.

The researchers stimulated the nerve endings of the sensitive zone of volunteers with the help of an endoscope. By influencing receptors with electrical signals of various intensities, they were able to deceive the brain, forcing them to react to them, as on real stimuli. In this case, the real feelings of the smell of plants, sweets, chemicals arose.

Unlike most other developments for the transmission of aromas via the Internet, the digital version does not require cartridges with chemicals. However, so far the technology is very «raw» and the wire in the nose is very annoying participants. Therefore, researchers work on alternative methods of stimulation, including by direct impact on the brain.

Digital smell technology can be applied not only in AR / VR devices, for transmission over the Internet, but also for medical purposes. For example, to assist people with smell impairment.
